Community Gardens

Community Garden

In the spirit of "grow a garden, share a garden" we invite the community to reserve a garden box to grow fresh vegetables for yourself, your family or the Weymouth Food Bank. The garden is located along Victoria Avenue, next to the Storybook Trail. There are ten raised beds and water on site. The rented beds are intended for solely organic gardening with no pesticides, herbicides or chemical additives. The project is intended to reconnect participants with the land and community.

The garden was established in memory of Alice and Hartley Powell in honour of their love and dedication to this community. The garden was made possible by the generosity of Roger and Louise Mullen, Trevor Sabine, volunteers from the WWDC, Weymouth Lions, Weymouth Branch 67 of the Canadian Legion and other community members. We also recognize our funding partners the Nova Scotia Government, Turning the Tide, the Royal Canadian Legion and the Weymouth branch of the Meteghan Lions club.

Ray Hupman Pavilion

In 1974, Ray and his wife Jean moved to Weymouth, and operated the Weymouth Variety Store for over 35 years. They volunteered in many ways, helping to make the community a better place. Ray was a former member of the Kiwanis Club, a member of the Weymouth Lions, a minor baseball coach, former chair of the Village Commission, and Treasurer for Weymouth Waterfront Development for over 14 years.

His minor baseball team captured a provincial championship in 1990, and he was inducted into the Nova Scotia Intermediate Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007, in the Builder category. During his tenure on the Village Commission, a medical centre was established in the community.

Ray died on January 24, 2024 at the age of 80. We commemorate  his contribution to Weymouth with this pavilion.

Beautification

A beautification project in 2022 included landscaping, the planting of trees and the placement of interpretive panels and benches along the berm. Planters were also constructed and placed along with picnic tables near the parking area.

Although people may have the idea that the berm was constructed as a flood prevention program, this is not the case although some one-way valves were placed in the berm to help drain water from the parking area and also help to prevent water coming inside the berm in a very limited manner. In 2024, solar lights and a dog waste station will be put on the berm, for the many that use the berm for walking their dogs.
